I had a man in my life one time, who actually told me he doesn’t want to wake up next to a boy. There was a very long time when my hair was very short, I texturized it at one point. But when you have men in your life who question whether you are pretty enough in short hair it can be an uncomfortable conversation
She walked into Vida E Cafe and I couldnt help but admire her delicately twisted long cornrow braids. Even from a distance, the hair looked soft and healthy. Her name is Yasmin Baba a lawyer at Sam Okudzeto & Associates . She was super friendly and agreed to a quick 5 minute chat about her natural hair journey.
It was admiration because it’s different. It’s not a look most people have seen. Interestingly, people thought I wasn’t Ghanaian. They thought I was Malian because they think East Africans rock this. A few times I heard some people speak in Twi, “Ah, ofiri Ghana anaa oy3 America ni?” Generally, I think when people see others trying to overly embrace their heritage, it’s assumed they are coming from outside. So yeah, it’s been mostly admiration.
What are you doing to protect your natural hair during the Harmattan which is at our doorstep? The unforgiving dryness of the weather should by now prompt you to take drastic measures to protect your coils before they break like everything else does during this season.
How did most people react to your current Locks?
Lily: I haven't worried about people's opinions on anything. I was an art teacher in GIS and even then I wore a Mohawk to school everyday and noone commented on that. I guess my work also contributes to my hair.
