If your natural hair were a Ghanaian dish what would it be?
Akua (Laughs!) Thats a really interesting question! It would be Jollof! A lot of people are wary when they see it but when they touch it they are like 'Wow! Its really soft!'
These are key questions you need to ask yourself way before you start writing your blog. It will serve as a guide through the blogging jungle, help you perfect your work, create a niche and drive traffic to your blog.
Why did you decide to lock your hair?
S.H I was never a fan of weaves back then. But I loved braids. My hair was always up in braids. I decided that I wanted something which didn't need external interventions. I didnt want to keep touching my hair and having to style it all the time. So it had to be locks.
How did most people react to your current Locks?
Lily: I haven't worried about people's opinions on anything. I was an art teacher in GIS and even then I wore a Mohawk to school everyday and noone commented on that. I guess my work also contributes to my hair.
You can imagine my delight when I discovered Kale at SowGreen during the Accra Green Market which I swung by today. Kale!!!! Oh boy, was some salad going to be in trouble! I then got really fresh oyster mushrooms from Green Harv Farms which is officially my best source of fresh oyster mushrooms any day, any time!
The weather was perfect for a cool kale and mushroom salad and by the time I was done, this had to be the BEST salad I had ever made! Cross my heart! The vinaigrette was amazing and I took inspiration from the AllRecipe site. I wasn't sure if I had to steam the kale or eat it raw. But now I know raw is great!
Were you natural before you met your husband? If no. What did he think when you made the change?
I had relaxed hair when I met him. He actually tried persuading me to go natural. He would laugh at me everytime I came from the salon and would tease me that my hair looked 'cooked'. He was happy when I went natural.
How did people react on your new change?
Interestingly people admired it. Some give passed some negative comments about how the hair falls out etc. They said negative comments but I didn't pay attention to them because it was on my head and it's my hair!
Amongst all the Ghanaian soups or there my least favorite is groundnut soup. Yeah I shocked you didn't I? How? Well when you have spent three years in secondary school eating the same soup with gari, rice and kenkey it kinda grows on you. I could have sworn my blood was replaced by the brown liquid by the time school was done with me.
So here I was preparing the same thing just to make sure my skills hadn't rusted over the years. I was also hoping to surprise my boo with some local dish for dinner.
So most of your mates have relaxed their hair. What has been their response for keeping yours in its natural state?
They ask why i haven't relaxed it yet. The thing is I love my fro’ and even though its taking time to grow i love it just the same. Also my Mom and sister are both natural so nothing anyone will say will make me bother about their negative comments.
What brought about the change from relaxed to natural?
M.N Well, I have always had a very sensitive scalp which made relaxing my hair very painful (she grimaced as she recollected the past) The thing is every time I relaxed my hair, it wouldn't even look relaxed. It just looked curly. So I decided it was enough!
#Africa2015 is a photography competition you would be interested in whether you are a professional or amateur photographer in Ghana or Africa. O.Q Why did you go natural?
N.O Well, it was actually my Mom who inspired me because her hair has been natural for a very long time. So she encouraged me to keep my hair natural after school.
