Akuna Wallet by Idris Elba A Future Game changer for Ghanaian Content Creators.

Idris Elba at the Fireside Chat

Hollywood actor Idris Elba was recently in Ghana to talk about Akuna Wallet a soon-to-be launched monetization product for African content creators by his company Akuna Group. Akuna not only seeks to help content creators monetize but to build mechanisms for crowdfunding for projects and building copyrights and Intellectual recognition for projects. Akuna will help creators who can’t monetize on TikTok to be able to do so via the Akuna wallet. Currently, Ghanaian and most African content creators cannot monetize on TikTok as the app doesn’t accept or have options for local wallet solutions.

I had the chance to ask him on how Ghanaian content creators can make their content reach the global stage. Watch the video below:

Despite the rather brief chat, it was quite a great opportunity to meet the Hollywood actor who is much invested in seeing the progress and growth of African content creators into the global space.

The Fireside Chat event which took place at the BOLD restaurant in Cantonments was attended by high-level creatives in the film and music industry in Ghana. It was MC’ed by Nii Amasah a L400 student at UniMAC.

Back in 2024, he visited Ghana to attend the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit. During the event, he emphasized the importance of African filmmakers producing high-quality content to compete on the global stage, highlighting that advancements in technology have made professional-grade filmmaking more accessible.

His recent visit to Ghana also saw him visiting the Ga Mantsɛ Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II who enstooled him as a son of the Ga Land. During his meeting with both traditional chiefs and the President, he revealed his plans to build a 22 acre film studio in Accra near the Osu Castle.

Many Ghanaians got to know of Idris through the following movies;

1. Beast of No Nation (2015) shot in Ghana and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) where he acted as the anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela.
